Skulltaker

Daemon Friday, yo. ¬†ūüėÄ ¬†Skulltaker is a pretty nasty dude. ¬†4+ killing blow will get anyone’s attention. ¬†He was actually pretty easy to paint, as most of the daemons were. ¬†I’m looking forward to painting some pink horrors soon…

Started building a Plagueclaw Catapult last night for my Skaven army… it’s still a work in progress, but I at least have a base to build off of now… ¬†Happy Friday!

Mentors Space Marine Dreadnought

One of the big mistakes that I made when I bought the starter kit for 40k was to glue the arms on the dreadnought. ¬†The second was that I traded my second one for an orc trukk… ¬†*sigh*

Not a lot of painting last night, however, I did construct a pretty cool Vermin Lord from leftover Skaven stuff, so hopefully I can have some pics of that up sometime next week…

The Masque

I went to bed last night, so no progress on the Firewarriors or Pathfinders, however, I did make some progress on my hammerhead yesterday, and I suspect that I will finish it today…

I’m unsure on the best way to use the Masque… I know that she’s supposed to be super-useful, but I’m still a little shaky on the rules. ¬†I won an ebay auction yesterday for 28 Tyranid Spores, which will turn into pink horrors once I get ahold of them, and I also ordered some Cold One and Black Orc bitz to make 4 Dragon Ogres.

Tau Crisis Suits

I essentially painted these guys twice. ¬†I painted them once how I wanted (including all their tiny weapons) and then the weapons wouldn’t stick in the slots, so I had to magnetize and re-paint. ¬†ugh. ¬†Last night I worked on my pathfinders and firewarriors and made some good progress while watching Inglorious Basterds, which was actually a pretty good movie.

I can’t give quite the detailed battle report that Doug gave, since it was last Friday, but I played a fantasy game against a friend that did not go well for my opponent. ¬†We did 2500 points Warriors of Chaos vs Orcs and Goblins. ¬†By turn 3, it was pretty obvious that Chaos was going to win. ¬†I took Throgg the Troll King, so I had him in a unit of Trolls which took out a giant on turn two. ¬†I had a Chaos lord on Behemoth with a unit of Knights that broke a unit of Savage Orcs on turn 2 that fled into Wulfric the Wanderer and his Marauders who had just shown up on the table in turn 2. ¬†My Forsaken killed a unit of night goblins, and Scilla Anfingrim killed another unit of Savage Orcs in turn 3. ¬†My Hellcannon failed its leadership in turn one and rushed forward. ¬†In turn 2, it misfired, but I rolled a 6, so it landed right on target at strength 10, killing 9 Black Orcs, who miraculously passed their leadership since they had Grimgore in their unit. ¬†That Hellcannon is SCARY. ¬†If it had gotten into combat with a regular unit instead of Grimgore’s ASF S7 madness, it would have done some serious damage. ¬†The best unit of the game? ¬†my Marauder Cavalry. ¬†I know that sounds weird, but every time they were charged, they just ran away and reformed the next turn, setting up the charging unit for a counter charge. ¬† Every. ¬†Single. ¬†Time. ¬†It must have happened 3 times in the course of the battle. ¬†I wish I had another unit just for that reason. ¬†It’s super scary when they feign like that and the charging unit gets counter charged by S5 Great Weapon weilding Dragon Ogres…

Civil War

I don’t have any pics to post just yet, as I’m still working on my stuff.¬† I’m painting large batches, so it takes me a while.¬† I wanted to play last Friday, and I am not going to play with my Daemons until they’re painted, so I went ahead and took my Dark Elves to the local gaming night.¬† It was my themed “Temple of Khaine” list with Executioners, Witch Elves, and the Cauldren of Blood.¬† I’ve been told repeatedly that this army list sucks and is full of bad choices.¬† That’s usually before I wipe someone’s over-hyped units off the table with my “bad army” though.¬† Don’t believe everything you read in White Dwarf or Warseer.com!¬† ūüôā¬† My general was a Death Hag with the cauldren, and I had a Death Hag BSB with the ASF banner in the Execs.¬† My other two characters were lvl 2 Sorceresses and then of course I had an assassin, shades, a couple of bolt throwers, harpies, and a couple units of Dark Riders (my favorite unit.)¬† There were mostly 40K players there, but there was a woman there who was looking for a fantasy game, so I agreed.¬† She had Dark Elves too, so this was going to be interesting.¬† She had a much tougher list than mine too!¬† Bolt throwers, a hydra, 2 units of knights, black guard, and a lvl 4 sorceress on pegasus with the focus familiar (this combo makes her nearly impossible to get to.)¬† She informed me that she had been playing for 9 years and seemed to know what she was doing.¬† However, she had a cookie-cutter army list and players who use those tend to have cookie-cutter strategies.¬† Rely on the strength of your list and steamroll over the enemy.¬† This is exactly what she tried to do.

Unfortunately for her, I had a few nasty tricks up my sleeve.¬† ūüôā¬† First of all, she stuck her hydra and knights out on the far flanks.¬† Not a problem, I have harpies and fast cav.¬† Those guys will never see a meaningful combat.¬† Then comes my execs, who are comonly known as a sub-standard unit when compared to Black Guard.¬† However, with +1 attack and stubborn from the cauldren, asf from the witch¬†BSB (who has 5 base attacks with the killing blow gift), you are looking at 6 St 4 attacks and¬†9 St 6 attacks all with hatred and killing blow.¬† They can hold their own against almost anything!¬† I put them right in the center flanked by witches and followed by the cauldren.¬† My favorite trick however, is the cloak that I put on one of my sorceresses that allows her to scout.¬† I stuck her in some woods with the shades on my opponent’s side of the table to deal with the other flank.¬† A level 2 sorceress can be almost as powerful offensively as a lvl 4 when using dark magic, and she proceeded to tear up the entire flank on that side of the table.¬† Using her Darkness spell to get free dice, I was able to blast apart a unit of knights and destroy half of the Black Guard in the first two turns of the game.¬† The other flank was held up the entire game, getting march blocked and trying to chase harpies and dark riders.¬† I always give my Dark Riders crossbows, even though most people think they aren’t worth it.¬† It’s much harder to ignore fast cav if they are peppering you with crossbows all the way across the table though!¬† As for the rest of her army, they were chopped to bits by my frenzied Khainite units in the middle of the table, as they had no support from the flanks.¬† The only thing that even gave me a small amount of trouble was her sorceress, but once I got dark riders behind her lines, I was able to nutralize her somewhat.¬† Massacre for the followers of Khaine!¬† All she had left at the end was the sorceress with half wounds, half a unit of knights that never saw combat, and the hydra.¬† I was glad to find that I wasn’t too rusty, and it was really nice to play again after such a long break!

Epidemius

Well… unfortunately I had very little time to paint this weekend, even though it was three days. ¬†I had a 2500 pt fantasy game on Friday night, a date (with my wife) on Saturday night, and Sunday was chock full of Church activities. ¬†So I’m still currently working on my Hammerhead, Pathfinders, and Fire Warriors.
This guy surprisingly took me hardly any time to paint. ¬†Unfortunately, he was dropped during the painting process, and I couldn’t re-attach the flags on top, but that also made him slightly more manageable. ¬†Epidemius is a great model if you have a ton of Nurgle creatures; unfortunately, I don’t, so until I build up some Nurgle goodness, I’m going to use him as a Great Unclean One, which may work out better anyway.

Bloodletters of Khorne

I finally got some new pictures taken last night, so here is my first Daemon unit for display. ¬†I won the old Fantasy Daemon spearhead for only $100, so I got a great deal on a new army and book, which probably would have cost me about $300 if I had gotten it all individually. ¬†What I love about Daemons is that they are SO easy to paint. ¬†Give ’em a base coat and then pick out the details and give them a wash. ¬†Done! ¬†I did all of my daemons (after they were assembled) in less than two weeks, which is pretty freakin fast.

I finished painting my now-magnetized crisis suits yesterday, and I also finished my Stealth suits last night (I just need to flock the stealth suit bases). ¬†The stealth suits were WAY too easy… I felt like I should do more, but they’re supposed to be super-low profile, so less is more, I guess…
